About Katy

KBAfter attending Woldingham school in Surrey, Katy Birchall went to the University of Manchester where she received a first class degree in English Literature and Linguistics and a Master’s in Post-1900 Literature, Theories and Cultures.

While at Manchester, Katy won the 2011 24/7 Theatre Festival Award for Most Promising New Writer for a comedy she wrote, produced and directed.

She went on to intern at The Telegraph and the BBC before getting a job as a journalist for Country Life magazine where she is currently Deputy Features Editor.

Katy’s pet labradors are the loves of her live, she is mildly obsessed with Jane Austen and one day she hopes to wake up as an elf in Lord of the Rings. She currently lives in Brixton with her much funnier housemate.

Katy is the debut author of teen fiction series The It Girl published by Egmont. The first in the series was published on 7 May 2015 with The It Girl 2: Team Awkward coming out in January 2016 and The It Girl 3 due for release in October 2016. The It Girl has been sold in 12 foreign territories including the USA, France, Germany and Spain.

Katy is represented by Jo Hayes at Bell Lomax Moreton.

  • I am 27 years old and started writing The It Girl 3 years ago – the first book was published in May 2015
  • My birthday is 12th July
  • Anna Huntley, the main character of The It Girl, is 14 years old and will be turning 15 on August 14th
  • The UK publisher of The It Girl series is Egmont. The It Girl has been translated into 12 languages
  • I am Deputy Features Editor of Country Life magazine, as well as an author – my job is to write fun features for the magazine and to come up with new ideas
  • My favourite animal…DOGS! (obviously)
  • My favourite superhero is The Scarlet Witch and also The Hulk
  • The authors who inspired me are: Jane Austen, Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl, J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Oscar Wilde and Noel Coward
